We have moved on up the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, spending two nights in Mal Pais was enough for us, I surfed a couple of times in the fun but sizey beach break waves, I forgot how tiring surfing a beach break was, I counted 20 duckdives in my first paddle-out, fairly easy duckdives but so draining.
Now we are in Tamarindo, which is far more developed and populated almost entirely by Americans, the hostels house a few Europeans and you can see the locals working in the shops and surfing a bit, but 75% of everyone you see are American.
The shops are more expensive than Panama, and San Jose, but it’s to be expected, there is a really nice beach, and a couple more within easy walking distance, which we will check out tomorrow.
Cutting our stay short in Mal Pais has given us a few more days to play with so we’re thinking of staying around here if it proves nice over the next couple of days, or perhaps moving on North into Nicaragua early, as we’ve heard nothing but good things about Costa Ricas neighbour, it’s offshore all day everyday, dirt cheap to live and still relatively safe to travel.
A note on hostels: Other Europeans love singing along to English songs, Crazy by Gnarles Barclay (I think?) is playing now on someones i-pod speakers, with four scandinavians singing along to the chorus in their funky accents, it’s very entertaining.
More updates later, the pictures before this one are from the beach at Mal Pais, which was lovely, and the sunset from our ferry on the way to Mal Pais the evening before.
