Chilling in Chinandega

Well, near Chinandega, not too sure if I should give away the location of this particular surf camp, I’d love to come back here and I’m afraid if people knew about the quality and consistency of the waves it might get even more over-run.

Charlie and I are in a Cabana, a private room with a hammock outside, overlooking a nice beach on the NW coast of Nicaragua. The waves are glassy until 9am every morning (apparently it’s offshore all day in the wet season next month), and they break like the best wedging shorebreaks I’ve ever surfed.

I’d compare it favourably to a really good day at VVF in Hossegor, it breaks in shallow water over sand, wedges all up and down the beach, lefts and rights, hollow and makeable, the most fun bodyboarding wave I’ve surfed in ages.

All the other guests and travelling surfers are stand-ups, there’s a couple of locals who I’ve seen have a go on the bodyboard which the hostel has, normally with only one fin on, but it’s pretty much 100% stand-up country.

I’d love to see what some decent bodyboarders would do to the waves, there’s sections and tubes everywhere, I’ve had great fun each morning and even when it’s onshore later on it’s a good laugh.

Charlie has been very patient and understanding, considering that there is nothing else to do here apart from surf, literally nothing. She’s taken loads of great photo’s during the surfs I’ve had and we’ve been for a couple of walks, collecting shells as we go, but we’re leaving a day early and going back to the relative civilisation of Leon before heading on to El Salvador in a couple of days.

I’m looking forward to the last morning session tomorrow, and to eating a proper meal, there’s no kitchen here so we’ve been having cold picnic style lunches and dinners to save money, did you know they made Spam with Cheese in it?

More updates when we get to El Salvador - if they have the internet…
